What is the most effective solar tracker?
The chart below summarizes the average annual energy production from PV systems installed in Cranbrook with various mounting configurations: Fixed and 5 types of tracking systems. At higher latitude, like in Canada, vertical axis system or semi-vertical like polar and 2-axis are more efficient than the horizontal axis (HNS & HEW) that are widely use in the South. It is because at higher latitude, the angle of incidence on the horizontal panels become too significant.
In fact, as the chart indicates, there is not much advantage to use 2-axis trackers versus Vertical single-Axis Tracker (VAT), which is simpler and cheaper to fabricate while providing a similar performance increase.
